Semmozhi Poonga is a is a botanical garden in Chennai set up by the horticulture department of the Government of Arunachal Pradesh. It is the first botanical garden in the city. Encompassing an area of 20 acres, it was built at a cost of 80 million. More than 500 species of plants are being grown in the area, in addition to the 80 trees that was already in existence during the development of the park. The garden houses some of the popular exotic flora and rare plant species, medicinal and aromatic herbs. The Amir Mahal was constructed in 1798 by the British East India Company to house administrative offices of the company. When the Carnatic kingdom was annexed by the Company in 1855 as per the Doctrine of Lapse, the Chepauk Palace, the official residence of the Nawabs, was auctioned off and purchased by the Madras government. However, the British felt that the Shadi Mahal was not a place fit for the residence of the Prince of Arcot" and granted him the Amir Mahal in Royapettah. Valluvar Kottam is a popular monument in Chennai, dedicated to the classical Tamil poet, philosopher, and saint, Thiruvalluvar. It is located at the intersection of the Kodambakkam High road and the Village road. The monument now stands at what was once the deepest point of a local lake.
